James Gunn Talks “Guardians of the Galaxy” Sequel

At Variety’s Entertainment & Technology Summit, director James Gunn mentioned a sequel to the summer blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy. There will be a second film, we don’t know when, and Gunn joked, “It’s going to be a really surprising open. What happens is all the characters are killed in the first 10 minutes. In really horribly brutal fashion.”

The five original Guardians will be back in action. It’s also a given that we will be introduced to another couple of characters in the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy realm.

Gunn was so excited on the day of launch that he sat down and began writing the script for the second film. “I spent all day on Aug. 1, the day the first movie was released, writing ‘Guardians 2,’” Gunn said. “I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story.”

If Gunn pulls it off, he is absolutely correct; it is more than one story and we’re excited for it. The DVD release of Guardians of the Galaxy is December 9 and will have director’s commentary and deleted scenes. There is even a long version in which Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) fakes a laugh at Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). “In the long version of the scene where Rocket is laughing at Quill, Quill gets very offended by that and takes a vote of the other Guardians to see who thinks that the laugh is fake,” Gunn said. “It’s a pretty fake laugh, and I think Rocket gets hurt that Groot goes against him.”
