Avengers Age of Ultron: Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Leaked Sony Emails on Marvel Show Female Lead Hesitance

Today, in “Further Proof that Hollywood Big Wigs learn FUCKING nothing about why films fail,” we have yet another embarrassing, face-palm worthy email from the big Sony hack.

The exchange is between Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter and SONY CEO Michael Lynton, apparently discussing Female led superhero films.

From: “IP”

To: “Lynton, Michael”

Subject: Female Movies

Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2014 05:32:50 -0400

Michael,

As we discussed on the phone, below are just a few examples. There are more.

Thanks,

Ike

1. Electra (Marvel) – Very bad idea and the end result was very, very bad. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=elektra.htm

2. Catwoman (WB/DC) – Catwoman was one of the most important female character within the Batmanfranchise. This film was a disaster. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=catwoman.htm

3. Supergirl – (DC) Supergirl was one of the most important female super hero in Superman franchise. This Movie came out in 1984 and did $14 million total domestic with opening weekend of $5.5 million. Again, another disaster.

Best,

Ike

GROAN.

As the Internet has been quick to point out, the sex of the lead in a superhero movie is a terrible correlator to the movie’s success. Green Lantern, Batman and Robin, Steele, Fantastic Four, Superman Returns, Daredevil. Nuff Said.

Somebody is going to make the first out-of-this-world successful female lead superhero film one of these days. If DC and Warner Brothers get to do that with Wonder Woman, with a completely new actress and role first, while Marvel has had Natasha Romanoff in their cards since Iron Man 2, Perlmutter is going to be eating his words.

Sound off in the comments about how much you want to see a Black Widow movie!
