Benedict Cumberbatch Will Play Doctor Strange

At long last, Marvel has found its Doctor Strange! According to Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch is currently in negotiations for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme.

Previous casting speculation ran the gamut from Tom Hardy to Keanu Reeves to Joaquin Phoenix and a couple of others who have been in the running for the coveted role. We can only hope that, after months of swarming rumors, we finally have an answer.

Cumberbatch has recently begun promoting The Imitation Game which will be in theaters on November 21. He also plays Sherlock Holmes on the popular BBC/PBS hit series, Sherlock and has roles in several upcoming films, including Jungle Book: Origins and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Scott Derrickson is helming Doctor Strange and Jon Spaihts is writing the script. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing. Doctor Strange isn’t directly tied to other Marvel films that we know of and is a “free-standing film”.

Doctor Strange originated from the 1960s comics. He is a neurosurgeon turned superhero, who reigns as Sorcerer Supreme, protecting earth from the threats in the far out reaches of the galaxy.
