HBO’s phenomenal show based on George R. R. Martin’s door-stopper A Song of Ice and Fire series is set to debut its fourth and most exciting season yet. The world of ‘Game of Thrones’ will see new faces, new places, and conflicts old and fresh when the season begins and here are some of the new characters that are all but certain to make an appearance.
WARNING: Potential spoilers for the show and anyone who has not read the books!
In seasons 2 and 3, the Lannisters have been actively courting the Tyrells, the Lords Paramount of the Reach, to defend Joffrey’s claim to the Iron Throne. Mace Tyrell is the Lord of this opulent, prosperous house, the son of Lady Olenna, the Queen of Thorns, and the father of Ser Loras and Lady Margaery. Up until the approaching season, Mace’s more highbrow dealings with the Lannisters have taken a back seat to more sly intrigues as Lady Olenna and Margaery have tried to worm their tendrils into Joffrey’s Court. But with Mace being the Lord of House Tyrell and Highgarden, the high games between him and the Lannisters must be catered to. As the royal wedding between Joffrey and Margaery looms, Mace will certainly have much at stake and much to say this season.
Dorne, the southernmost region of Westeros and its highest house the Martells, have yet to appear in the show. However, they are also set to treat with the Lannisters this season, represented by Oberyn Martell, known as the Red Viper of Dorne. House Martell may be playing nice with the Lannisters but they have an old grudge against them, especially Oberyn. As the Red Viper flaunts his exotic eroticism in King’s Landing, he’ll be sure to manipulate the players and dynamics of the game to his own ends.

Oberyn is not often seen far from his paramour and the mother of his four youngest bastard daughters, Ellaria Sand. Bastard-born of Westeros are all given surnames according to the region of their birth, just as Jon and Ramsey are surnamed Snow, for the North, Ellaria is named Sand, for Dorne. As the lover and mother of the Prince of Dorne and his children, she is deeply steeped in the struggles and politics of House Martell. She will surely play a role for the future of Dorne as the game of thrones continues in King’s Landing.
Hizdahr zo Loraq
As Daenerys Targaryen continues her campaign of liberating Slaver’s Bay as part of her quest to reclaim the Seven Kingdoms, she sets her sights on the mother of all slave cities, Meereen. The city of towering pyramids that house the most ancient and powerful slaver families taunts and harasses Daenerys at every turn. With her enemies striking at her from the shadows and few allies to turn to, Dany is forced to consider a marriage to Hizdahr zo Loraq, a noble from a long line of Ghiscari descent. Hizdahr promises to bring peace to Meereen for Dany in exchange for her hand, but she is ever suspicious of his true motives. Hizdahr will surely have to compete with established characters vying for Dany’s affection as well, such as Daario Naharis and Jorah Mormont.

Child of the Forest
In the lore of A Song of Ice and Fire, long before the Andals crossed the Narrow Sea and brought the Faith of the Seven to Westeros, long before The First Men crossed the now broken Arm of Dorne to Westeros with Bronze and Horses, Westeros was inhabited by the race known as the Children of the Forest. These magical creatures that resembled men of short stature, communed with the sacred weirwood trees and carved the faces that we see upon them in the series. They have become nearly extinct in the thousands and thousands of years preceding the current War of Five Kings. However, Brandon Stark and his loyal companions may yet find some of the last of the Children in their daring quest north of the Wall, following his mysterious visions.
The Three-Eyed Raven
Ever since Bran was pushed from the tower of Winterfell and lost the use of his legs, he has had perplexing visions of a three-eyed Raven. After escaping Winterfell in Season 2, he has been venturing north to find the mysterious creature of his visions and understand the sight through time and place that has been surging in him. But the answers he seeks may not be what he expects. Beyond the Wall, all manner of mysterious creatures and forces lurk, ancient and powerful. Bran will come face to face with things no human has ever seen in his quest to fulfil his destiny.
We can expect these new characters to join the rich returning cast when the fourth season of ‘Game of Thrones’ premieres on April 6th.
