Saeko Busujima is a character from the manga and anime series High School of the Dead. The series revolves around a pandemiuc that turns humans into zombies, which are referred to by the main characters as “them.” Saeko is a third year student at Fujimi High School and is the president of the school’s kendo club. Saeko is introduced as a calm, collected girl with pride in her skills, and sometimes shows compassion and mercy. In the series, she’s a member of the survivor group led by Takashi Komuro and the daughter of Master Busujima. She’s considered to be the most reliable of the fighters. Everyone can count on her combat skills to pull them through a tough spot. She is without doubt one of the reasons the protagonists have been able to survive for so long.
At the beginning and throughout the series, Saeko is shown to be a kind, caring, and strong perso. Later on, Saeko reveals sadistic tendencies while fighting “them.” She tells her leader, Takashi, that she had previously almost become the victim of sexual assault, but was able to fight back and injure her assailant. Takashi says that this was self-defense, but Saeko counters this and claims that it’s her “raw nature” to take pleasure in inflicting pain. She believes that in this way she’s no better than the zombies. Saeko is very conflicted about this part of her character, and even at one point considers giving up.
Saeko is a complicated character who’s a mix of beautiful and badass. With bright blue eyes and deep purple hair, she’s certainly makes for a striking presence. Cosplayer Sayla absolutely nails her depiction of Saeko. Her costume work is on point, and she really brings the sexy with lace-topped, black, thigh-high stockings under functional knee pads and boots. Her sailor fuku top looks sweet and appropriately schoolgirl, but that kitana she wields shows that she exists in a constant life or death situation. Kudos to Sayla as well for her makeup and gorgeous, but deadly, stare. Sayla really conveys with this cosplay that Saeko is seductive, sadistic, and a true survivor.
