Monday saw the release of the third and final trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens just two months ahead of its worldwide theatrical release. And you came to this article to be assured that the trailer is phenomenal and to learn about the new details in the two minute clip, right?
Yes, the trailer is incredible, and it also slightly expands what little knowledge we have about the movie. So, here are eight important facts and speculations to take away from the new trailer.
Rey is definitely the main character
In a film with so many characters, both new and familiar, it might be difficult to judge who is the most important of the bunch. But as the trailer begins with Rey exploring a rundown Star Destroyer (probably the one that crashed on Jakku that we saw in the second trailer), it’s clear that she will be the focus. She also has more screentime in the trailer than any other character, and when asked by an anonymous female voice who she is, Rey responds with “I’m no one.” And you know that if someone says they are a nobody, they are definitely lying.
Finn is definitely a former Imperial Stormtrooper
This isn’t a huge surprise, and Finn’s role in the movie is probably one of the most clear. He was raised as an Imperial loyalist, and later become a Stormtrooper. But in the trailer, his Tie Fighter can be seen hurtling towards what is presumably Jakku, where he finds Rey’s village. Whether Finn has a change of heart regarding the Empire before or after crashing on the desert planet remains to be seen. If it’s the former, it’s likely that Finn’s superior officers discover his traitorous feelings and try exterminate him, resulting in Finn being stranded on Jakku. But if it’s the latter, then perhaps the Empire’s failure to rescue Finn after being shot down leads to him joining the rebellion.
Kylo Ren has a huge crush on Darth Vader
Kylo Ren is set to be the biggest Vader fanboy of all time. Their masks both look similar, Kylo Ren speaks with a low, modulated voice, and, from behind, he’d be easy to mistake for Vader. Midway through the trailer, he says “Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started.”
Now, let’s discuss this statement, because it’s a bit of a puzzler all on its own. But if you combine the phrase “I will finish what you started” with the new Episode VII poster that was released this week as well, it becomes clear.
If you look behind Rey and above Finn, what do you see? Yeah, that is definitely a Death Star. So, presumably, Kylo Ren will be working on the construction of yet another Death Star, hoping that the third time’s the charm.
The return of the Jedi wasn’t as publicized as we thought
I don’t mean the movie, I mean the actual return of the Jedi. Following Episode VI, we probably all just assumed that everybody in the galaxy now knew that the Jedi had made an epic comeback, but that doesn’t look to be the case. Han Solo informs Rey and Finn that all of the stories about the Dark Side and Jedi are true — all of them. This implies that, throughout the galaxy, the return of Jedi and The Force were simply rumor and speculation. Combine that with Luke’s mysterious absence from the trailer and that he has likely gone into hiding, he and his rebel comrades may have tried to downplay the role of a Jedi in the rebellion.
Maz Kanata’s Fortress of Flags
Lupita Nyong’o will be performance capturing a character known as Maz Kanata, who is some kind of female treasure hunter/pirate/scallywag. And we see Solo, Bd8, Rey, and Finn walking into what is probably her hideout. We also get to see a massive droid, and, if you look closely, you’ll see a Mandalorian flag in the upper middle portion of the screen. This suggests that Kanata has had some dealings with bounty hunters.
The new trailer shows a total of three separate aerial battles on three separate planets. The first is one we’ve seen before, on Jakku, with Tie Fighters attempting to shoot down the Millenium Falcon. The second is one we’ve also seen a portion of, with X-Wings and Ties duking it out over a large body of water on a green and forested planet. The final and most jaw-dropping battle is X-Wings versus Tie Fighters again, but this time, it’s on a mountainous, snowy planet. Maybe it’s Hoth, and maybe not. Only time will tell.
Han and Leia Reunited
If the return of the Jedi isn’t a widely known factor in the galaxy, it’s probably safe to just throw out all assumptions regarding the events following Episode VI, including the assumption that Han and Leia go on to live happily ever after.
Who’s to say that life just doesn’t let them stay together, and, in the end, they have to part ways? Leia finally makes an appearance in the trailer, albeit a short one. She stands with her head against Han’s chest, looking frightened and worried.
Who knows, maybe they did stay together this whole time. But it seems to me like this embrace is one of a love recently rekindled, but about to be tested again as Han goes off to fight once more.
Finn has Anakin’s lightsaber
Now, we all thought that this lightsaber, used by both Anakin and Luke, was gone forever after Luke dropped it in cloud city. Well, he didn’t actually drop it, he just happened to lose the hand that was holding it. But somehow, Finn is in possession of it now, and wields it while facing down Kylo Ren. Epic. But how did he get it? Did he find it himself, or did someone give it to him?
The new trailer answers some questions, but raises new ones as well, effectively making the hype for Episode VII even more intense than ever.
