All gamers have their own origin story. You know, that first time you picked up a controller and you just knew something magical was about to begin. Maybe it was the first time you went to a LAN party with your buddy to play Halo, or when the family opened up a Wii on Christmas morning and played through levels of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. For some of us, it started a little more archaic than that. For us it was going to the arcade and waiting for your favorite game machine and hoping to Thor you didn’t die before you ran out of quarters or tokens. For me it was peeking out of my living room window, watching my dad come down the driveway with that huge rectangular NES box and staying up late fighting with my sister about who got the next turn to find the princess since she wasn’t in the castle or sitting right up close to the T.V. to shoot ducks (and sometimes pretend to shoot that stupid dog that kept laughing at me).

It’s not hard to walk into a gaming store or section to find piles upon piles of gaming accessories to help you expand your typical gaming experience. Some are good, some are bad, and some are downright ridiculous. This trend of bizarre gaming accessories isn’t new. Companies have been pedaling awkward add-ons since as far back as the Atari days. We have always been marketed unnecessary and overpriced equipment to “help” us experience our consoles in a fresh way, though most of the time it turned out rotten.

If you're like me, chances are you were a subscriber to a little known gaming magazine called Nintendo Power. While it doesn't seem like much now in this age of the smartphones and tablets, at the time it was a huge deal, as it was the closest many Nintendo fans such as myself could get first looks, reviews, and the all important walkthroughs of some of out favorite games. Sadly, the era of gaming magazines seems to have passed, as the Internet has made it possible now to find walkthroughs, previews, reviews, etc. at a much faster and frequent rate then we've ever been able to in the past. But in an ironic twist of fate, the very thing that ultimately ended magazines such as Nintendo Power is now helping to revive it and keep it alive, as the Internet Archive has over 100 issues of Nintendo Power on their archive that you can read right now.
