Broadway musicals are certainly popular in Hollywood these days. Into the Woods and Les Miserables have already received film adaptations and now Wicked, the Wizard of Oz inspired Broadway hit, could be set to film soon. Word is that a Wicked movie could be slated for a 2016 theater release.
Film Divider went straight to the producers to learn if the rumors were based in reality. Wicked producer Mark Platt said nothing was set in stone, but a movie is the current goal of the team. Winnie Holzman, who wrote the musical’s book, is currently penning a screenplay. Stephen Daldry is involved as a director.
Platt commented, “He’s been on for a year or two. But it’s in process. 2016 is the goal, but I don’t know whether we’ll make that goal or not. We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high. We’re going to scrutinize our work on the screenplay and our prep on the movie, and when we feel like it’s ready, okay. We’re not going to shoot a release date is what I’m saying. It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush.”
Another piece of speculation is that Idina Menzel would star based on her Frozen popularity, but that is currently unconfirmed.
